first day feels: the last first day of school

September 8, 2014 Monday

It’s that time of the year again, blog. It’s finally arrived. The time when the summer days have gone and rolled by and ta-dah… you’re finally waking up to the glorious morning of the first day of school. Yup. Not only has September come around your doorstep but classes have officially begun. Depending on your optimistic or fatalistic disposition, you may have been anticipating–planning each detail of the day down to your #ootd–or dreading it. Normally it’s a little bit of both. Who knows, who really knows. I mean. Y’know. First day of school feels.
So yes, first day of school. Fall 2014 Edition.

Only this year, it’s not just any first day of school. It’s my last first day of school.

Hence the feels and yup was totes anticipating this. Not gonna lie about fantasizing this post would include (*coughs* mainly focus on) pictures of me sipping my last first day of school Second Cup order (or at least being green with my teal David’s Tea thermos), talking about my understated ootd, and posting an obligatory cliche photo of the front campus of King’s College Circle. Yep, I know. Predictable UofT September propaganda. Please don’t judge, I really wanted to.

But that’s not what happened. Real life happened. I mean I’m not even gonna take the time to rant on the the coffee-filled brewing air of my dear St. George campus in perfect autumn afternoon lighting embellished with fresh faced students. Everywhere you see (fresh haircuts) smiles, hope, optimism, and [let’s be honest now] sheer self-absorption + snobbery. Nope. Not gonna do it. Can’t make me do it. Maybe next time.
But I’m glad. 😉
Besides I have a whole year–yikes, semester–to take predictable cliche photos of kings college circle. Mwuahaha ;P
The turn of events showed me that real life is out there just maybe not in one of these hashtaggable flawless photos and predictable narratives. Maybe they’re equally if not more insightful and beautiful moments. And while I’ll be skipping the surface obsessions of #ootd, sbux vs second cup, campus instagramshots, I’ve actually come to the realize that…
yes, I do have my own first day of school traditions. 😉

Started the day off with some wholesome goodness. Kept it simple because it’s nice like that some mornings. And yes! there were strawberries at home. It’s been awhile. So glad to have this classic again.
IMG_6830The Oatmeal Diaries: [Last] First Day of School Morning Edition
– steel-cut oats
– almond milk (unsweetened)
– ground flaxseed
– sprinkles of Nature Path’s Qia Organic Superfood Cereal (chia seeds, buckwheat groats, hemp seeds)
– fresh organic strawberries
– I’m gonna bet I put some cinnamon in there. Lots.
– a nice mug of hot english grey tea

um yum ❤

So how exactly did my day go?

  • Class was good.  I was on time despite everything. Actually no, I was not on time. (UofT time is 10min after the hour–which is so hard to get the habit out of when you’re in ‘real life’ ugh.) I arrived around 1:20pm because of a crazy morning at home (squeezed my AM work out yee) but thankfully… he was only about to begin the actual intro slides. O m g. Yay. I guess I just missed the introductions. I mean he started right when I came in. Tralalalalaa.
  • Class observations: everyone + their fresh haircuts, best outfits, and attention span on. I liked my prof too. No, really, it was a good class. Small class. All Sociology specialists. Oh stats, 300 level. Should be a good year.
  • Successful errands run afterwards.
**Ah the logistics of getting around St. George campus: you have to get around to get around… to finish your journey. Whoa, kind of metaphorical now. Entails lots of walking. I totes missed this. I mean it’s bee five months since I last stepped foot in campus and oh my god, I missed this. Hashtag: I totes forgot UofT is populated with semi fit to lean people everywhere. Walk, walk, walk.**

    – UofT wifi at Robarts. Check.
    – UofT Bookstore. Textbook. UofT merch teehee. Could not resist.
    – Decided Kensington market for hummus + baba ganoush can wait another day. Like Thursday.
    – also decided I can get a haircut and buy more new (read: smaller clothes that actually fit) another day or by the end of the week. Just accumulate new wardrobe slowly.
    – I only had one more token lol… so
    – Queen’s park -> homebound
    – Stopped by Target: had to finally get the ipad mini keyboard. Done. Check. Yay!
    – Enamoured by the DVD section at Target. Omg, sale?! So dadada the choices I made: TVD S4 + AHS S1.
    – Staples to compare prices of the keyboard. The same! Super yay. $$$ 🙂
    – And finally at Metro: initially planned to buy buffalo sauce for my buffalo wing cauliflower bites but decided nah. I don’t even love love buffalo wings. Maybe bbq or honey mustard?! Garlic parm? Jerk? Mmm, possibilities. 🙂
    – Saw the Walden Farms aisle and oh-my-god. How did I not know they have a mock pb spread? I know, I know prob totes #badbadnotgood (sucralose and what not) but… I need to address and prevent these serious PB issues I have. 😉
So all in all a good day.
I usually do take these trips after my first day of classes. I think it was around two or three years ago when this started. I go around, walk forever, buy textbooks (used or new), and sneak in my usual trip to HMV to see what’s around and what my heart desires. This year I added a trip to the grocery to my day. Point is, it’s kind of an errand run that becomes a destressor. So yay I think I’m ready for the new school year now. 😉

Also something new this year: I finished the day off with some yoga mat love. Feels good. ❤

IMG_7080IMG_7081 IMG_7166 IMG_7168 IMG_7171IMG_7288a look: first day of school merch

Guys I actually feel guilty that I ended up succumbing to the power of UofT merch / propaganda. Wait, what is guilt? Is it really a guilty pleasure when… it was just pleasure? Nevermind, it was kinda guilty. Legit feels. I mean, how can anyone truly resist the drop down prices of the school clothes. ($6 shirts?!?!) Sure everyone has it, but we’re all proud right? Also how can you resist (moment #2) standing in line to pay for your textbooks only to be bombarded with more refined UofT souvenirs and memorabilia. Honestly, there were so much porn for my eyes: mugs, thermoses, nicer ‘koalatea’ sweaters. Ugh. Going back.

IMG_7295Truth be told, I just seriously needed these xs shirts. Because I also realized this day that I need clothes that actually fit me (everything is so big now!). Also this crew neck sweater totes beats my old one.

IMG_7298IMG_7302IMG_7307mwuahahaha also the Target spree 😉

What, deep down I am still that girl who loves Stefan Salvatore. Also Asylum (AHS S2) looks sooo cool but in the end, the main thing we fell in love with was Tate and Violet. Who am I kidding, I’m totes waiting for AHS S2 to go on sale. Coming back for that and the Sons of Anarchy because budget! Also the Walden Farms peanut spreads. No shame guys. 😉

Yep, I think I’m ready for the fall… and for the study nights that await me.

ps. 100 days strong! 😉 ❤
